Our
Story
The Tuk-Ham Festival is the ultimate homecoming. It is the heart of the Ham people of Southern Kaduna—a joyful celebration of our deep roots, our rich culture, and our ancient link to the Nok civilization.
What is Tuk-Ham?
"Ham Day"
In our local language, Tuk-Ham simply translates to "Ham Day" or "Ham Celebration." It is a time for everyone to return home, celebrate together, and proudly share our culture with the world.
Two Traditions in One
The modern festival joins two ancient practices together: the Ku (a time to honor our ancestors) and the Fain (a joyful thanksgiving and purification festival held after the harvest).
While these traditions are very old, Tuk-Ham officially became a public event in 1980. The festival is proudly celebrated during the Easter season, reflecting the predominantly Christian faith of the Ham people. Today, Tuk-Ham beautifully blends the spiritual joy and renewal of Easter with deep cultural pride, ensuring that the history and Nok civilisation are never forgotten.
A Full Week of Culture
Tuk-Ham takes place in Kwain (popularly known as Kwoi), the headquarters of the Jaba local government in Kaduna State. Anchored around the Easter holiday to allow families and the community to worship and celebrate together, what used to be a two-day event has now expanded into a massive 7-day "Ham Week."
